GDR service branches contain only those fixes that are widely released to address widespread, critical issues. LDR service branches contain hotfixes in addition to widely released fixes. The security catalog files, for which the attributes are not listed, are signed with a Microsoft digital signature.

Because there is feature parity between Windows Server R2 Standard and Datacenter editions, your decision will be based on your virtualization strategy, as virtualization rights are the only differentiator between the editions. If your strategy calls for a highly virtualized environment, Datacenter edition will provide you with optimum flexibility because it allows for unlimited virtualization. This edition gives you the elasticity to add and move virtual OSEs across Datacenter licensed servers without needing to track the virtual OSE count on that server.

If you purchase Standard edition today but find you need to expand the virtualization capacity of your licensed server, you can do one of the following: Purchase additional Standard edition licenses and assign them to the same physical server, giving you the rights to run additional instances of Windows Server. The server must have the appropriate number of licenses assigned to it to ensure coverage of all of the virtual OSEs that are running at any given time. Purchase a Software Assurance Step-up license to Datacenter edition, changing the license to a higher edition that allows unlimited virtual OSEs.

To use this benefit, your underlying license must have Software Assurance. With the Windows Server R2 Standard edition licensing model, you can grow your virtualization environment by either buying a step-up license to Datacenter edition if you have Software Assurance, or by simply buying additional Standard edition licenses and assigning them to the same physical server.

For example, if you have a two-processor server and want to run a total of four VOSEs, you can purchase two Standard edition licenses and assign them to the same server. Additional examples are shown in the following table. Logical cores are not counted as sockets. A single license of Standard and Datacenter edition covers up to two physical processors per physical server. Standard edition allows up to 2 virtual instances while the Datacenter edition allows unlimited number of virtual instances.

For example, a Windows Server R2 Standard edition installed on a physical server with one socket CPU can support up to two instances of virtual machines. These virtual machines can be Server R2 Standard or Essentials edition.

Similarly, if you install a Windows Server R2 Datacenter edition , then you can install an unlimited number of virtual machines. Scenario 2 : Install Server Standard Edition on a physical server with 1 physical processor, running 8 instances of virtual machines.

A total of 50 users will be accessing the server. Remember that a single Standard edition license covers up to two physical processors and up to two instances of virtual machines. Since the requirement is to run 8 instances of virtual machines, we need four Standard edition licenses. If we decided to use the Datacenter edition in this scenario, a single license with 50 CAL would be enough to cover our needs, because the Datacenter edition license supports an unlimited number of virtual instances and up to two physical processors.

Windows licensing can have weird twist and conditions and you are right to be careful but in this case I don’t believe there are anything that stops them reverting back to Server They purchased a Downgrade Image which by its name tells us that they have the right to revert back to Server and that view is reinforced by the wording on the Cals licence.

It would be a perverse twist to our logical use of the English Language for MS to state that they could not do that. Can you confirm the following – only 5 users??

How many Server CALs do they have in total? How many users and devices? Coz logically is that they server would come pre-installed with previous OS version but have media kit of licensed version. They say, “The Windows Server product is streamlined and simple, making it easy for customers to choose the edition that is right for their needs”.

So they give the right to downgrade Server to Server and revert back at a later date in the column marked Use Rights. However, I can see that Dell may want to makes nominal charges for providing copies of the alternative installation medias but that should not affect their rights to use Server With licencing there are always the possibilities of tripping over un-envisaged restrictions.

I don’t have any media any media whatsoever. Any suggestions on how I can get the media or is there a download available? I disagree with you being licensed for Once came out, Dell refers to any media for previous versions as “downgrade media”.

Nowhere above does it show a Server license being purchased. I can only think that you need to examine the order more and talk to the supplier. Perhaps there are quotes or email correspondence that will clarify the situation.

Thank you everyone. I thought my brain wasn’t working because everyone was saying OP bought Server and used downgrade rights. I couldn’t see anywhere in the list where it said he bought Server Note to OP: You can probably buy or for approximately the same price as and use downgrade rights to install if you’re sure that’s what you want.

If you buy ‘retail’ rather than OEM you can move that license to another machine when you retire this one. It’s not all that old, but also not that fast. I was thinking that it might be advantageous trying to get it to a newer OS version for now. If they decide that it needs to serve them for a few more years it’s the only server they have , then I’ll do as you suggested and upgrade it to or , install some more RAM and SSDs and plug along for a few more years. I’m not locked into , I wrote about installing because I thought that maybe the licensing purchased with the server would allow an upgrade to with no extra cost ergo, the purpose of this post.

I would suggest trying to see if they have access to the Dell Digital Locker. If they bought the server with and downgraded, then the download links should be there. But make sure the server is supported for v and there are drivers for v for whatever you have installed in that box before you try to upgrade.
